Geotourism is a niche-market that has grown over the past 20-plus years. It is a form of nature-based tourism that showcases an area’s geographical character, its “earth history” which includes geology and landscape, flora and fauna, and their interaction with humans to form a cultural identity.
It is a niche that focuses on education, conservation, and sustainability. It is through the growing phenomenon of geotourism that the relatively new concept of the “geopark” – and the official designation of the UNESCO Global Geopark – has emerged.
Niagara is ideally situated and qualified to become one of a select few worldwide Global Geoparks, encompassing the entire Niagara Region.
